Three years ago, real-time GPS tracking was a nice-to-have for Indian transporters. A fleet of 30 trucks could compete for tier-1 contracts without it. Today, it's a hard requirement on 80%+ of organised cargo, mandated by regulation for commercial vehicles, and the table-stakes feature your customers' procurement teams check before signing.
This article is about what real-time tracking actually means, what it doesn't mean, and what to install if you haven't already.
AIS-140: the regulation
AIS-140 is the Automotive Industry Standard published by the Ministry of Road Transport that defines what a "tracking device" must do for commercial vehicles. It's been around since 2018 but enforcement has been patchy. In 2024–25, several states (Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat) began requiring AIS-140-compliant devices for permit renewals on all commercial vehicles above 12 tonnes. By mid-2026, this is national.
An AIS-140 device must: report GPS coordinates every 30 seconds; have a backup battery for at least 4 hours of operation; include a panic button accessible to the driver; transmit data to a Vehicle Location Tracking (VLT) backend in real-time. Most cheap "GPS trackers" from the local market do not meet all four. Make sure yours does.
What "real-time" actually means
The term "real-time" is used loosely. Here's what the four common tiers actually deliver:
- Polled tracking (3–4 minute updates): Cheap, useful for billing dispute resolution, useless for live operations. Most ₹200/month trackers.
- Near-real-time (60–90 second updates): Workable for dispatch. Common in mid-tier telematics.
- Real-time (15–30 second updates): What AIS-140 requires. What SkyRocket delivers as standard.
- Continuous (sub-5-second): Useful only for time-critical hazmat / express. Expensive bandwidth, niche use case.
For most fleets, real-time (15–30s) is the right tier. Faster than that is wasted bandwidth and battery.
Why your consignors care
The procurement teams at large consignors — paint companies, FMCG majors, e-commerce, auto OEMs — have shifted from "do you have tracking?" to "send us the live tracking link." Their warehouse teams use these links to plan unloading slots. Their customer service teams use them to give end-customers accurate ETAs. Their finance teams use them to release payments faster.
A consignor who can see your truck at Surat ETA Mumbai 2pm tomorrow can prep his dock. A consignor flying blind has to call your dispatcher every two hours. After three or four calls, he starts looking for a transporter who doesn't make him work that hard.

What to install
Three categories of device work well in Indian conditions today:
OEM-fitted (Tata Telematics, Ashok Leyland iAlert, Mahindra Care): Pre-installed on new trucks. Reliable, warranty-backed, slightly expensive on monthly fees (₹350–₹500/truck/month). Lock-in to that OEM's platform.
Aftermarket AIS-140 certified (Teltonika FMC230, Concox JT701, Atrack AX11): Standalone devices that mount under the dash, talk to your TMS via standard protocols. ₹4,500–₹8,000 one-time hardware cost, ₹150–₹250/month SIM card. Best price-to-performance, what we recommend by default.
Smartphone-only (driver phone with the app): Lowest cost, works if you trust drivers to keep their phone charged and the app open. Acceptable as backup, not as primary for AIS-140 compliance.

What tracking won't fix
Tracking gives you visibility. It does not give you control. We've seen fleets buy expensive tracking and continue to bleed money because they didn't act on what tracking showed them.
If your driver is taking a 40-minute detour to his cousin's house, tracking shows it. You still have to call the driver, ask why, and decide whether to discipline. If your truck is parked at an unauthorised stop for 3 hours, tracking shows it. You still have to enforce the rule. Real-time tracking is necessary but not sufficient. Pair it with anomaly alerts, geofencing, and consequences, or it becomes background noise.
If your fleet runs commercial vehicles above 12 tonnes and you don't have AIS-140-compliant tracking installed, you have a regulatory exposure that will cost you a permit renewal somewhere in the next 6–12 months. Beyond compliance, the commercial cost of not having it — lost contracts, customer churn, slower payments — is already showing up in fleets that have waited. The deployment cost is small. The window to do it without losing customers is closing.
